Essential Tool

Like most of you know, the music industry business is a tough one, with a lot of regulations, rules and other small details that you need to take advantage of to get paid and be able to live off of your music. When you are young and an aspiring starving artist, people tend to try to take advantage of you just because you lack a certain knowledge to value your rights as a writer or a producer or whatever you're doing...

Well, there is a solution... They say that nobody can teach you something better than yourself.
So check this out:
music money succes jeff brabec todd brabec.jpg

This is a book by Jeff Brabec (VP of Business Affairs for Chrysalis Music Group)and his twin brother Todd Brabec (Director of Membership for ASCAP), so you know they are good references, they know what they're talking about. FL STUDIO Tutorial Vol 2 - Split Tracks in FL Studio for Pro Tools & Other DAWs

This is a Tutorial to show you how to export the wave files of your different instruments in a very fast and effective way before sending the tracks over for a mixing session. This can basically work on any software or hardware once you have all the tracks separated.

PS: You can do it the way shown in the video or just mute all your instruments except for the one you want to export and then select the "SONG" mode (don't do it in the "Pattern (PAT)" mode or it is just going to export the pattern and not the instrument throughout the whole song).

Special Thanks to NFX again for this video. make sure to log on to WARBEATS by clicking here

Producer's Corner Vol 1

This is a new section dedicated to producers (major and underground) that we think have influenced the hip hop scene (in the US and overseas) with a fresh new sound, making them trendsetters over the past few years.

We will just try to let you guys know a little more about them, how they started, their big breakup, their most influential work and their discography.

Hope the success of these individuals will motivate everybody out there who is trying to be successful in their lives, no matter what they're doing...

So today, we will start with one of our favorite producers at Cle De Sol, which is... (drum rolls)... Khari Cain aka NEEDLZ.
needlz.jpg

-->
Biography:
The Lansing, Michigan native developed a love for music at an early age from his father, a jazz buff who kept John Coltrane and Charles Mingus in constant rotation. He absorbed Hip Hop sounds from the 90's from artists like Mobb Deep, Wu Tang, Snoop, Jay-Z, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, B.I.G., The Roots. Coming from the Midwest he listened to everything from house to bass music, to East and West Coast.
Inspired to leave his own mark on the musical scene, Needlz began deejaying. He packed up to attend Florida A&M University, where he became a permanent fixture at parties and local clubs. With a firm understanding of how to make crowds gravitate to the dance floor, Needlz fueled his passion to get behind the boards and make the hits.
Needlz moved to New York to pursue a graduate degree in Music Business at NYU. He utilized an internship at Bad Boy Entertainment as a testing ground for his production talent, and caught the ear of former A&R executive Folayan Knight. Impressed by the infectious personality of Needlz tracks, Knight began to manage the young producer and helped usher his music into the industry spotlight. Needlz gained acclaim for the infectious single Think Yall Know from Fabolous 2003 mixtape album, More Street Dreams 2, which was his first major placement.
In 2004, Needlz signature high energy production brought him to the forefront of popular music with the debut single from Tennessees G-Unit member Young Buck entitled Let Me In. The vibrant track became an instant hit, helping to push Young Bucks album, Straight Outta Cashville, to Gold status. The album has now sold over 1,000,000 copies and has since been certified platinum by the RIAA, and Let Me In was nominated for a 2004 Vibe Award for Street Anthem of the Year.
Describing his own production signature as “an oxymoron: clean and dirty at the same time,” Needlz since caught the ear of many popular rap acts, most notably 50 Cent. With a predilection of straying away from sampling, his “clean and dirty” style often consists of abrasive basslines, grimy sound effects, and light melodies.
With the establishment of his production company, Dry Rain Entertainment, and a growing musical palette of singles garnering strong radio support, Needlz is forging his way into an elite circle of beat crafters.
He is now residing in Atlanta, Georgia where he is currently working on numerous projects such as the upcoming 50 cent's album "Before I Self Destruct".

--> Equipment Used
When he was still living in Brooklyn, he used to own vintage synths like an 80's Kurzweil, an MPC 2000XL, MPC 4000 and a bunch of vintage racks. At the time he was really anti-software.
But ever since he moved to Atlanta his equipment became lighter: he got rid of his synths and vintage racks and now uses a midi keyboard with logic and an MPC 4000 and he is still in the process of trying to master all this new equipment.

Me I do...

How To Start A Music Production Studio...

In this post, we will just focus on a music production studio, not a recording studio. Yes, there is a difference between those, even though it might not be a big one depending on the genre of music you want to specialize into or your level as a producer or musician.

Well, as a producer there are some things that you absolutely need to make your sound crispy and your mixes clearer: (non exhaustive list)

1. Good ears... How to get that? Lol, just listen to a loooot (I really mean a lot) of music pertaining to the genre of music that you want to make. Pay a particular attention to the drums arrangements since that is generally the what makes the difference between the different types of music. You can start by focusing on your favorite artist or favorite producer and just learn how they make their music (by that I DO NOT MEAN TO COPY OR BITE THEIR STYLES, just get the inspiration and learn from better that you) . It might take you a while to get accustomed to it and to really start having a sweet ear but thats worth it and it will make you better.

obamas large ears.jpg

2. Get a powerful computer... It can either be MAc or PC, whatever you are more comfortable with, but remember that MAC is not compatible with all the music softwares.
Try not to overload this computer with lots of movies, useless programs or other stuff that you get from the net (no porn please, it kills ur computer!!). You will need a lot of internal memory to run most of the music softwares.

pc_vs_mac.jpg

3. Get a sequencer... Some people like more harware (machines) such as MPC than softwares (computer programs) such as FL Studio, Cubase or Reason. My advice would be to start with something you think you can learn fast and that you feel the most comfortable with, no matter what it is, because you can pretty much achieve the same quality of music with any of these different stuffs: it is not tha machine that makes your sound, it is the person that masters them and uses his talent to produce the best Sh%* out of it.
And remenber, what works for somebody else does not necessarily work for you.

mpc_collage.jpg

4. Get an audio interface . For those who don't know what it is, click on the link.
Basically, that will be the heart of your studio, from where the clarity of your sound will be "built".
So choose it wisely, and do not hesitate to spend a few extra bucks for it because it can really make a big difference (trust me I know!! lol).
Select the one that you can afford, a good one to start with is in the range of $100-150. Also choose it depending on the inputs (what comes in) and outputs (what goes out) that you need to work with, and if you have machines to connect to it such as MPCs or midi keyboards etc...

5. Get a midi controller... Anything you like will do, even if you are not a good keyboard player. I would recommend to pick one with at least 49 keys so that you have more freedom and it really opens your creativity. Foe even $50 you can have one with 25 keys.

6. Get some good monitoring headphones...
They differ from hi-fi headphones from the fact that they reproduce the true frequences of a sound that you play through your audio interface. They will allow you to make a better instrument selection for your beats and help you with the mix.
Personnaly I prefer to compose with the headphones on so that I can really feel the music and bring more emotion into it and pick the right kits to go with it.
Good monitoring headphones start from $100, it will actually take time for you to get used to their sound since it will be very neutral when it comes fresh out of the box but give it some time and listen to some quality music with it and your ears will feel better.

akg240s headphones.jpg

7. Get some very good monitoring speakers (also called monitors)....
They do the same job as the monitoring headphones, same characteristics, but you have to be pickier and more selective with what you actually choose because they will be the judge for the mix quality. I personally use some KRK RP5 and I love them, but something else might work better for you.
For about $300 ($150 a speaker) you can get some good quality monitors.

krk rp 5.jpg

That is basically it, with all that gear you should be ready to go. The rest is in your hands, work hard and you will go far.

FL STUDIO Tutorial Vol 1 - Parametric EQ

For all of you out there using FL Studio, here are some tips to make tour drums and bass sound better without clashing... This is called equalisation. very basic in FL Studio, gets more complicated on some hardware, but it will bring a lot to your music.

SWEET GEARS

I was just surfing the net and I found this quite interesting site " http://mybedroomstudio.ning.com" . On this website, people from around the world post the pictures of their personal studio!!
They go from the very low budget bedroom gear packed in a corner of a room to some million $$$ console rooms owned by some renowned engineers and producers.

I found some really cool pics, here are some of them for your viewing pleasure.

Our personal studios looks more like the 3rd picture right now, but my ultimate goal is to bring it to the level of what' on the 1st pic... Hum, some would say long way to go but all I've got to say is Watch us...

RESPECT THAT

Now, I'm sorry for my language but this is THE SHIT!!
So many people have been talking down on this program, saying that it was incomplete, the sound was crappy and bla bla bla. But none of them did not really bring any facts!
I just noticed that the people who did not like this baby right here either found it too difficult to use or said that there were not enough stock instruments and that they sounded crappy anyway...

Well, let me tell you something... again, this is THE SHIT.
Now picture this, let's say you buy a black Honda accord with cloth seats and no significant options to upgrade it... Now your neighbor buys the same black Honda, but he adds in some leather seats, 20 inch black rims, tints all the windows and adds a subwoofer to the stereo system... No need to say that you will notice a difference, his car will be a head turner. NOW PEOPLE, IT'S THE SAME THING WITH FL STUDIO. I REPEAT IT'S THE SAME THING WITH FL STUDIO.
Nobody should use any stcok sounds in any programs, just do your research, found some soundfonts, some VSTs, some wave sounds, basically anything that you like, that pertains to your musical style and that sounds good to your ears...
Now you wonder how do I that that, huh? Hummm, that's what we're here for maaan. I'm not gonna give out all secrets right now it's just the second post (he he he).
Hang on, we got you, to be continued...
